Connected Farm: Make crop management decisions faster
Connected Farm, a new of system of software and communication services from Trimble takes farm management efficiency to the next level by combining precision farming information collected in the field with data management software and cell phone technology.
"This system is a very powerful farm management tool," says Wayne Wenzel, a company representative. "It provides an easy, secure wireless transfer of production records from the field to the office, and back to the field. You and all your employees can now work off of the same set of data and receive updates at the same time, no matter how far you may be from one another."
For example, you can transfer such information as field maps, guidance lines and spray records from GPS or handheld computers to the office simply by pushing Send on the touch screen. The information is sent and received via a cellular data modem using the wireless data plan of your choice. There is no need to run USB sticks from one place to another.
"Using integrated software, you can take your precision farming data and merge it with your accounting program to generate true profit maps and enterprise statements," Wenzel says. "Profit maps are automatically generated to show which precision farming practices are more profitable so you can make better management decisions.
The system can be used by scouts or consultants in the field to immediately access information such as soil sample locations or images of insects or diseases using wireless transmissions from handheld computers. It can save time in the cab of a tractor, pickup truck or other vehicle by receiving or sending information such as seeding rate or yield data. In the office, all this data can be downloaded and uploaded, to be instantly available when and where it is needed instantly.
Connected Farm can be used with a variety of hardware and software components, including those offered by Trimble. For example, the company's Trac software can be used to keep such field records as restricted use chemicals, scale tickets, and crop plans; to track profitability on a field-by-field basis; and to print detailed reports of fertilizers, hybrids, weather and more.
The Trimble in-cab FmX integrated display can serve as the hub of Connected Farm operations by performing such precision ag functions as monitoring yields, controlling chemical application rates or field leveling. The Trimble Juno SC and Nomad handheld computers and the Trimble Yuma tablet computer can be used to send and receive data.
Wenzel points out some of the many ways of using Connected Farm:
- To design or edit an A/B line and then immediately share it with other vehicles in the field for improved guidance management;
- To streamline collection of soil sampling data by wirelessly transferring target maps to the field, or completed jobs to the office, with no limitations on the number of workers doing the sampling at the same time;
- To create prescription maps in the office and immediately send them to the field;
- To automatically save original data files in a secure location outside the farm and eliminate the fear of losing valuable data; and
- To collect yield data during harvest and quickly send the information to the office for data processing.
